n my experience students get confused with systems flowcharts (among other things :-).

Flow charts are different from those flow charts which used to be used to represent algorithms. The central idea of the system flowchart is the process box which may have more than one item going into it and more than one output also. The basic symbols used in the Subject Guide are:
The process and input/output boxes typically have words written inside. Any box can be joined to another with flow arrows and any box can have annotations if more explanation is required than will fit in the box. These examples are related to the Fair Trade scenario.
